JennAir invented the self-ventilated downdraft range back in 1961, and that heritage still shows up today in its downdraft cooktops: a retractable or fixed vent built into the cooktop itself pulls smoke, steam, and odor down and out through interior ducting, instead of relying on a hood mounted overhead. That means a JennAir downdraft cooktop is really two systems sharing one surface — the burners or induction elements that do the cooking, and a separate blower motor, damper, and duct run that do the ventilating. A “no heat” complaint and a “no ventilation” complaint are almost never caused by the same failed part.
On the cooking side, we diagnose unresponsive touch controls, induction zones that won’t detect cookware, or gas burners that click without lighting. On the ventilation side, we test the downdraft blower motor directly, check the damper for a mechanism that’s stuck or not sealing, and inspect the ducting for a restriction that’s choking airflow — three distinct points of failure that each call for a different repair.
