What Temperature Alarm Means

JennAir's documentation describes this as an Over-Temp Alarm that helps avoid food spoilage and high energy costs by sounding an alert when refrigerator temperatures stay at unusually high levels — on new installs it repeats roughly every 1.5 hours until the fridge drops below 48°F (9°C) and the freezer below 15°F (-9°C).

Common Causes of Temperature Alarm

  • A newly installed or recently reset refrigerator still cooling down to its normal operating range
  • Doors left open, or opened frequently, preventing the unit from holding temperature
  • A genuine cooling system problem (failed compressor, blocked condenser airflow, or a refrigerant issue) if the alarm persists well beyond a normal cooldown period

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Press the "Over Temp" indicator on the display to silence the alert, and if this is a new installation, allow the unit up to 24 hours to reach normal operating temperature before treating a persistent alarm as a problem, per JennAir's own guidance.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • If the alarm persists beyond a reasonable cooldown window, diagnosing a genuine cooling problem means accessing sealed refrigerant-system parts, which isn't safe or legal for anyone but a certified technician to open.
  • Silencing the alarm repeatedly without addressing a real cooling problem risks losing an entire refrigerator's worth of food before the issue becomes obvious another way.
  • The compressor and condenser sit near line-voltage connections at the rear of the unit, making an unsupervised inspection back there a shock risk.
  • Misdiagnosing a persistent alarm as "just settling in" when it's actually a failing compressor delays a repair until the unit stops cooling entirely.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

Temperature Alarm FAQ

Yes, for the first several hours to a day, since it needs time to reach its normal operating temperature; if it's still alarming well beyond that window, it's worth a technician visit.

Yes, frequent or prolonged door openings can raise internal temperature enough to trigger the alarm even when the refrigerator itself is working fine.
