What SE Means
JennAir's SE page says there is a problem with the keypad, described as the user interface, or the associated wiring. SE is one of the lettered codes rather than an F-number, and it appears on displays that show two characters rather than four.
Common Causes of SE
- A keypad reporting a stuck or shorted key
- Cooking residue or moisture bridging the key area
- A wiring or ribbon problem at the keypad
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Wipe the keypad, let it dry completely, and reset at the breaker for a minute - a film of cooking residue across the keys is a genuinely common cause on a unit mounted above a range.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- If a proper clean does not clear SE, the problem has moved behind the panel, and behind the panel is the microwave's high-voltage section.
- A keypad that reads a key as held down will not let the control accept anything else, so the appliance stays locked out until the real cause is found.
- Membranes tear easily once they have aged in steam, and prying at one is the quickest way to guarantee a part order.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

Code meanings can change between control generations. Before acting on a code, match the full model number on your appliance's rating label against the manual for that model. We are an independent repair service, not affiliated with Whirlpool Corporation.
