What E_21 Means
JennAir's E_21 page states that the control panel switches off because of excessively high temperatures, and that the internal temperature of the electronic parts is too high. It is about the cooktop's own electronics bay rather than about any one cooking zone.
Common Causes of E_21
- Ventilation beneath the cooktop obstructed by cabinetry or stored items
- Sustained high-power cooking with no cooling interval
- A cooling fan in the electronics bay that is no longer moving air
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Wait for the cooktop to cool before using it again - that is JennAir's own instruction - and while you wait, check whether anything in the cabinet below has grown into the ventilation space the cooktop depends on.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- The bay that has just overheated sits directly beneath a glass surface that stays hot long after the display goes dark, so opening it early is a burn risk as well as a shock one.
- A fan replaced without finding why the airflow was inadequate leaves the new one working just as hard as the old one did.
- Reassembling the bay without its seal properly seated lets the next boil-over reach live parts.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
