What C81, C82 or C83 Means
JennAir's range page documents C81, C82 and C83 together, and says the surface cooking area has overheated and the automatic shutoff was activated. It is the cooktop side of the range reporting, not the oven, and its first instruction is to turn the oven off if it happens to be running.
Common Causes of C81, C82 or C83
- A cooking area run at high power long enough to trip its overheat protection
- A pan boiled dry on the surface
- Heat from the oven below adding to the surface temperature during a long cycle
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Turn off the oven if it is on, take the cookware off the affected area, and wait about five minutes for it to cool before switching the cooking area back on - the five-minute figure is JennAir's own.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- This is the protection working, so nothing inside needs replacing, and opening a range to chase it achieves nothing.
- If the shutoff keeps tripping on a cool surface, the sensing under the cooktop is implicated, and that is beneath a glass surface that is bonded and brittle at its edges.
- Trying to cool a hot surface quickly with a damp cloth risks thermal shock, and a cracked cooktop on a range is a major repair.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
