JennAir pioneered the self-ventilated downdraft range back in 1961, and the format still works on a completely different principle than an overhead hood. Instead of pulling smoke and steam upward into a canopy, a telescoping vent panel rises between or behind the burners and draws air horizontally across the cooktop surface. When that panel won’t move, the cause sits in that specific rising mechanism.
The Track Gets Gunked Before the Motor Fails
The panel typically rides on a guide track driven by a small motor and a lift screw or rack-and-pinion assembly tucked behind the cooktop. Boiled-over sauce and grease mist can migrate into that track over time, and a panel that used to glide smoothly starts binding partway up or down long before the motor itself is actually worn out.
Test With the Cooktop Cool and Unplugged
With the appliance powered down at the breaker, see whether the panel moves freely by hand once it’s disengaged from the motor. Resistance you can feel by hand points to the track or guide rails; a panel that moves freely by hand but won’t respond to the control points toward the motor or its control relay instead.
Don’t Force a Stuck Panel
Pushing or pulling a jammed panel can bend the guide rails or strip the lift mechanism, turning a simple cleaning job into a full assembly replacement.
