What F5 Means
JennAir's own documentation describes F5 as a problem with the oven door latch assembly, the door latch switches, or the associated wiring — the range's control board can't confirm the door is properly latched or unlatched, which most often shows up when a self-clean cycle can't complete normally.
Common Causes of F5
- Failed door latch motor or solenoid
- Door latch switch misalignment or failure
- Control board failing to release the latch signal correctly
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Don't force the door. Power the range down at the breaker and let the oven cool fully — many latch-related lockouts, especially after self-clean, release on their own once the cavity temperature drops back to a normal range.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- A self-clean cycle can leave the cavity well above 800°F, so forcing a locked door open at that temperature risks a serious burn.
- The latch solenoid is wired into the same high-voltage circuit as the heating elements, so testing it live is a genuine shock risk.
- Forcing a jammed latch mechanism can bend the strike plate, making the door harder to latch or unlatch correctly afterward.
- A latch reassembled even slightly misaligned can fail to release even after the underlying fault is "fixed," leaving you locked out again.
- Reaching the latch mechanism typically means taking off the inner door panel, a repair step that tends to can affect their remaining warranty coverage — check your terms first.
