If your glassware has developed a cloudy, chalky film that won’t wipe off, or your dishwasher seems to be losing wash pressure over time, mineral deposits from hard water are the most likely explanation, and they’re largely preventable with a few habits.
Keep the Salt Reservoir Filled if Your Model Has One
Some JennAir dishwashers include a built-in water softener with a dedicated salt compartment separate from the detergent dispenser. If yours does, letting that reservoir run empty allows hard-water minerals straight through to your dishes and internal components.
Run a Dishwasher-Safe Descaling Treatment Periodically
Even without a built-in softener, an occasional descaling rinse formulated for dishwashers helps dissolve mineral buildup on the heating element and spray arm nozzles before it restricts them.
Inspect the Spray Arm Nozzles
Mineral deposits narrow the small holes in the spray arms over months, gradually weakening wash pressure long before it becomes obvious. Pop the arms off occasionally and check that each nozzle is clear.
Watch for the Warning Signs
