What F21 Means
JennAir's F21 page for electric cooktops states there is a problem with power supply frequency. That is a statement about the electricity reaching the appliance rather than about anything inside it, which makes it unusual among cooktop codes.
Common Causes of F21
- Power supplied from a generator or inverter whose output frequency sits outside the cooktop's requirement
- An unstable incoming supply from the utility or from site wiring
- A problem in the cooktop's own supply-sensing circuit
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
There is no safe homeowner check for supply frequency, and JennAir's page does not offer one - what you can do is note whether other appliances on the same circuit are behaving oddly, and mention any generator, inverter or recent electrical work when you call.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- This traces to the electrical supply rather than to a cooktop part, so opening the appliance adds risk without addressing what the code is reporting.
- Measuring supply frequency properly is electrician's work with instruments most households do not have, carried out on live conductors.
- Running a cooktop on a supply it is not designed for can damage the power electronics over time, so continuing to use it while the cause is unknown is a gamble.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
